Magnetism is a phenomenon that never ceases to mesmerize adults and children alike. Sometimes it seems more tangible than electrical phenomena, since, after all, we have all experienced the attraction of metal objects by magnets, or we have used a compass to orient ourselves. However, from the point of view of physics, it has always been a highly complex phenomenon, both conceptually and in the way that the physical laws that govern it take shape. Covering magnetism in a single talk, without being overly simplistic or overextended in its complexities, is quite an adventure. In this talk we will first address magnetism in its field aspect that exerts an action on certain materials, and then from the point of view of how we generate magnetic fields, from the use of electric currents in coils, to ferromagnetic materials and the concept of quantum spin. But don't be overwhelmed: we will frame all the explanations in a simple context and with many experiments, and we will present some of the most promising applications of applied magnetism.
