ALOVECIENCIA

Defying Gravity

Workshop: 23rd October 2025, 19:00, Conference Hall/Library of Alovera.

The talk will be given by Dr. Víctor Vega, IMDEA nanociencia.

The activity “Defying Gravity” is an outreach talk for the general public that explores, through simple visual experiments, different situations in which we seem to defy gravity. Various examples of levitation and propulsion help us better understand gravity and how other forces, such as inertia, centrifugal force, and angular momentum, can temporarily balance or overcome gravitational pull. Each experiment is accompanied by explanations that help us understand the physical phenomena behind what we observe. The goal is to understand that it's not about “canceling” gravity, but about learning to live with it and even take advantage of it. The session uses an accessible visual narrative that encourages participation and sparks curiosity. Overall, the activity aims to provide the audience with an engaging, simple, and entertaining way to experience physics.

The Talk

During the talk, Dr. Victor Vega conducted several experiments aimed at understanding how certain physical phenomena seem to defy gravity, such as what happens when we suspend a gyroscope rotating at high speed from one end.
