ALOVECIENCIA

How does it work the technology in space? - Workshop

Workshop: 3th April 2025, 19:00, Conference Hall/Library of Alovera.

By José Luis F. Cuñado and (Odctor in Physics, IMDEA nanociencia) and Miriam Pajas Sanz (Telecommunications Engineer, Polytechnic School of Alcalá de Henares), Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA). This Thursday, as a continuation of preious talk by Miriam Pajas (see here), we'll conduct experiments to explore how the vacuum environment affects technological elements. You will directly see many of the details >that must be taken into account when sending something into space. The whole hour will be devoted to experiments in which the audience will also take part actively.

The workshop

Before starting the experiments, Miriam and José Luis briefly reviewed the topics presented in the previous Thursday's talk, both as a reminder for those who attended that Thursday, and as an update for those who weren't.

The experimental setup prepared by José Luis for the workshop consisted of a small vacuum chamber based on a 3 mm thick quartz tube. The elements placed inside the chamber can be observed through the transparent tube (photograph below). Some temperature probes were built by the young students participating in the workshop.

Below, performing one of the experiments: comparing how objects heat up much more when exposed to light in vacuum than when in air.
